Neptune is the eighth and farthest known planet from the Sun in the Solar System. It is the fourth largest planet by diameter, the third most massive planet, and the densest giant planet. Neptune and Uranus are ice giants. The other two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants. Neptune has a faint and fragmented ring system, which was discovered in 1982.

It is named after the Roman god of the sea and it's astronomical symbol is a stylised version of the god Neptune's trident.
